The Stkambr Rose. — On Wednesday morning a serious accident happened to the steamer Rose, which put in at Newcastle (to take id coals) on her way to Moreton Bay. The Roie while proceeding to the coul wharf, and when nearly abreast of the Queen's uharf, •ha run on an anchor belonging to the barque Ksnma, wlncli lay in the channel and had no buoy on it ; the concussion wat rather slight, and was supposed to have been cauted bj striking a wrap or chain. Capt. Patli<on proce. dftl to the wharf, swung the ricVi with her head dowu the channel, and was in the act of making her fast, when he noticed that the w»t going down by the head, aud on taking off the hatchet, found the forehold tull of water ; he immediately ran the vessel into the middle bank to prevent her from linking. The bulk. head between the engine-room and the forehold being tight, no water got aft, but to large is the hole that it was found impossible to get the water out of ihe hold, where it roie and fell with the tide. Up to yesterday they had been unable to get it the leak ; but when the steamer left at noon a chain had been passed under the Rose, and made fust to the Maitlund on one side, and to a schooner on the other, and at high water it was intended to oack her off into deep water, in order that a direr might ascertain what was the extent of the damage. — Sydney Herald.
