NEWSPAPER FOR TARANAKI.

IN compliance with the general wish of the Taranaki Settlers, it is proposed to commence in Januaiy next, the publication of a Weekly Journal, in New Plymouth ; to be named the " Taranaki Herald." Assertion or argument that a Newspaper would be advantageous to the settlement must be deemed supeifiuous ; inasmuch as, on this point, the settlers are the best judges of their own wants , and they have decided to suppoit a paper, conducted on the principles and for the purposes, which we shall attempt briefly to explain. It is intended that the Taranaki Herald shall be emphatically a Paper for the Settlers. To promote their prosperity and impro\ement, moral and physical, agiicultural and commercial; to develope the resources of the district, and its advantages as a field for colonization, will be the primary objects ever present to the minds of its conductors. Occasion may arise for animadversion on the conduct of the Government, the New Zealand Company, or individuals in public station ; and in such case there will be no unworthy shrinking from the'performance of a journalist's duty : but such opportunities will be avoided rather than welcomed, the Herald being intended as the advocate of Taranaki, not the assailant of any peison or party in the colony. If attacks upon public men and public bodies are eschewed, more especially will everything hearing the mark of private or personal hostility be repudiated. To collect and disseminate local information and suggestions ; to be the medium of discussing questions more immediately interesting to the inhabitants of this part of New Zealand ; to be the organ of their claims upon the attention of the Government here ; of the public and of the New Zealand Company in England ; and on the other hand to present a concise view of the progress of events abroad, will be the constant aim of the Herald's conductors. How far this scheme can be carried out, nd the degree of support it will receive, time alone must show ; but the experiment will be earnestly and honestly tried. The size of the paper, will, at the commencement, be that of the Government Gazette, with a supplementary leaf or sheet, whenever enlargement of room is needed by press of matter. The first number will be published on Saturday, the January, 1849. Subscribers names will be received by Messrs. Williamson & Wilson, at the New Zealander -Office, Auckland.
