Original Correspondence.
To the Editor of the New Zealander. *Sir,— The popularity of your columns, and the liberal spirit in which they are conducted, induces me to request you to devote the space which these few lines would occupy, for the purpose of presenting to the public and the autFiorities capable of removing the cause, the seriou" mcovenience and loss, which arcrue to the inhabitants of Taranaki, through the present system adopted by the Government of issuing their payments in drafts, payable at Wellington. I have lately made several trips to the settlement, with live stock and mciclundize, and not wtbout participating in the diflku't.es attending the ncgotiition of the said drafts, winch can be effected in the locality at a heavy discount only. Cannot the settlers of Taranaki be relieved from this drawback to their interests, when we say that specie iq abundant in Sidney, and that Bills on her Majesty 'a Home Government, are there received at a high premium ? I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, Howard Dowker, Master of the Star of China. Au»u^fc 11, 1848.
