ITALY—DEFEAT OF AN AUSTRIAN ARMY. LOMBARDY.
By the arrival of news from Turin of tbe 31st of March, accounts have been received of an encounter near Moutt chiro, on the Chiesa, between a strong body ol the Austrian army and the Sardinian O. neral lies, who was at the head of four thousand reguLir troops, and seven thousand volunteers. The Sardinian General pained a brilliant victory, and took from thf enemy an entire squadron of cavalry, three cannons and s»me ! baggage. This news was bi ought by a special courier, who started from Milan on the 80th. The forces at the disposal of Charles Albert amounted to 30,000 men. This, news appears in a postscript to the Risorgimento of the 31stThe same journal states that the Austrian army, commanded by General Radefeki, had retired fiom its position, at Sonciuo nnd Orcinovi, towards Mantua, the road lying through Montechiaro, where there is a bridge over the Chiesa. Bergamo, Lodi, Cremona, Crema, and Berecia, had been likewise evacuated by the Austrians. The Risorgimento of Tuiin, of the 3 1st ultimo, contains a royal Proclamation, dated fiom Voghere, 29th, in which Charles Albert, declaring it to be his duty to defend the cause of Italy with his troops, calls upon his subjects meanwhile to defend the frontiers and coasts of the kingdom, The Bishop of Tortona has issued a circular to his cteigy, directing them to offer up public prayeis for the victory of the Italian cause. By a decree of the 27th, the Provisional Government or Milan has opened a loan for twenty-fonr millions of livre ; another decree, of the same date, abolishes the lottery; and a third allows the introduction of Piedmontese wines at a moderate duty. Decrees of the war department order all officers upon leave of absence throughout Lombardy to return immeditely to Milan, and ducct the enrolments of caval y»
PAPAL STATES. Letters from Rome, of March 28th, state that the most perfect tranquility prevailed since the departure of the troops ai>d volunteers for the frontiers. The civic guards occupied all the military posts. A subscription had been entered into for the purpose of equipping the volunteers. The Pope had subscribed 50,000 francs, and the religious orders, the nobility, merchants, and cardinals, had also largely contributed. The poor vied in generosity and patriotism with the rich.
