REPLY. Auckland, 4th December, 1845.
Gpntlemfn, The Address by which I am honoured, and the motives that prompted you to express such cordial feplings have giatifiKd me much: and I beg you to accept my sincere thanks. Whatever I may have been able to effect for the welfare of this country, and whutever attention I may have had opportunitiei of showing to individuals, would have been greater under less unfavorable cucumstances. My time has been 10 fully occupied, and my attention engrossed by difficult questions involving thesecurity of the Colonists, that I have been uuable 10 give bo much thought to ordinary business as I desired. Now that your position ii belter known to the British Government, wnd to Parliament — now that you have soldiers, ships, and money, in the Colony— that your exports are coroiderable and increasing— a very diflerent state of affairs may be bi ought about, and you may prosper rapidly while your relations with the Abon« gines continue prudent and just. My own inlcieat in New Zealand will not ceaie. In England I may be able to assist in promoting the welfare of my countrymen at the antipodes — and no personal feeling shall interfere with my efforts for the advantage of the whole community. JllJ 11 the name ol Mrs. Fitzlloy, whose interest in this country will not fail — in the name of her respected father — and inyielf, I return thankb for your kind wishes lor a pleasant voyage, and sale return to a happy home— l have the honor to remain, Gentlemen, Your veiy faithful servant, HoniitT Fiizßoy, r.n., Late Governor of New Zealand. The Memberi of the " Fountain of Fr endihip" Lodge, Independent oidcr of Odd Fellows, Auckland.
To the Editor of the New Zealander. Sir,— My attention having been called to un error in my labt communication, I have to request that you will permit me in your next number to correct it. It was to an Audi ess presented to Captain Fitzßoy by certain inhabitant* of Auckland, that hia Excellency gave the reply fiom which! quoted, and not to the Addiess of the " Odd Fellows."— lam, Sir, &c, &c> Ji.
