TO THE CHIEF EDTOR OF THE " SOUTHERN CROSS."

Sin,— We were obliged List week, with much leluctan'ce. to step somewhat beyond the bounds of our proper province, to repel your unprovoked attack upon us iv the pievious number of the Southern Cioss; and, bs you have thought pioper to assail us again, with redoubled bitterness, we aie once more compelled to say a word or two in our own defence. We have not now addressed you in your own proper person, hut should it be necessary to recur to the subject ag.iin, we shall deem it prudent so to do, in order that the public may know with whom we have to deal, and the degree of weight to attach to your assertions We think it quite unnecessary to offer any furthei reply to your reiterated imputations against us respect ing the Anglo Maori Warder* Your charges have been fully met by the gentleman who w.is editor of it, in his letter published in your last. Our relation to the Warder was a matter of arrangement between th it gentleman and ourselves, which should have been sufficient guarantee to you that theie could be nothing indecorous or dishonorable in the undcitaking. We are gratified to know that the public are content upon this point ;•— such thoughts as you have expressed upon the subject could only Imvsj been conceived in a mind consti'u ed like your own, and entertained by the little party of which you are the centre. Your charge against us of throwing obstacles in the way of the Waidcr, lest it should outstrip the New Zealander, is best refutpd by the fact of the printing of it having been again entrusted to us on its revival. But you have now taken up fresh ground against ni, and state in your last that you are informed lint the New Zealander -aiml Warder are printed with Government type. We are aware that you have had r course befoie now io unwoithy means of piying into the nfl'iiis of our estiiblishment, by using whatever influence you could with individuals who have been in our employment, in older to gratify your litigious curiosity. But, by whatever means you acquired the infoimation upon which you giounil this accusation, we aie able to say that it is incoiiec',and that your statement is devoid of tiuth. We can unhesitatingly contiadict you, and say that the types and other materials we use in printing the papers tint you name, are our own propeity; and we may infoun you that we have still enough to spare to print another journal, which we have been about to s'art at a neighbouring settlement.
