We are enabled to state positively that the Lords of the Admiralty have determined to make Sydney a naval station , and that arrangements are being made for the reception of surplus itores for a fifth rate ship, (abo-it forty four guns,) a sloop, and a steam vesspl. These will he in addition to any vessel that may be stationed at New Zealand. — Sydney Herald, Mu;/ 15. The American Whaler Triton, — By the Ariel we leai n that this ship arrived at Talnta on the 29th February, in chai ge of the chief officer, Captain Spencer and thii t«"en ot the crew having been murdered by the natives of Mulgrave Island, one of the King's Mill Group, bbouL the latter end of January last. It appears that on the vessel arriving off the island, two of the boats proceeded on shore for wood and water, in one of which was the captain and five men, and in the other the third mate with a like number, tliej left the ship which was cruising: off and on, iv the morning, and did not return during the day, much to the surprise of the chief officer and others on board. During the night, however, seveial natives, headed by a European (supposed to be a Spaniard) came alongside the vessel in canoes, nnd contrived to board h?r, when they immediately attacked the watch on deck, and a desperate encounter ensued, in which the cook was killed by the natives. The ringleader of these savages w«s subsequently killed with a lance by the second mate, but, notwithstanding:, they still kept the upper hand, and the crew, in order to avoid death, fled below, where they were kept two days, the Natives remaining on board the whole of that time. On the second day it was thought that they had left the ship, all being quiet on deck, and one of the boys volunteered to go up and see, but no Boonec was his head above the companion than it was taken off by a single stroke with a spade. A few hours afterwards, however, they took to their canoes, and proceeded on shore, the crew then vent on deck, and found that the ship had drifted a considerable distance from the island, which circumstance, no doubt, induced the Natives to leave her. The mate then, having but little doubt that the boats' crew« had fallen victims to these people prior to their coming off to the vesiel, thought it advisable to bear up for Tahiti. The Triton recruited at this port, about 18 monthi since.— Sydney Herald, May 10.
