COMMERCIAL.
London Market Report, December 24. — Owing to the distress generally prevailing throughout the country, and the numbers unemployed in the manufacturing districts, the falling off in consumption continues, notwithstanding the low prices ruling for most articles. Under those circumstances, the business which has been transacted in the produce maiket since our last has not been of an extensive kind. Prices, however, do not show much variation, though in particular instances a decline may be noticed, and it is, moreover, generally believed that, as regards some articles, quotations must go lower. Still importers are looking fur better rates, and latterly sales have not been pressed, so that there is a perceptible reduction in the quantities brought forward. Money, too, is more plentiful, and discounts are lower, the rates being from 5| to G| per rent, on good paper. At weekly meeting of the Bank of England yesterday, the minimum rate of interest was fixed at 5 per cent.) so that discounts will now go lower.
