PUBLICANS LICENSES.
TWday last, being the Annual Licensing day, the following Magistrates Thomas Beckham, Jas. Coadt-s, J. Johnson, C. W. Ligar, T. R. Atkyns, J. Scott, A. Kennedy, L. McLachlan, T. B. White, Esquires, and Major Matson, assembled at tlic Resident Magistrate's Court, to hear the applications of the several parties who bad given notice of their intention to apply for licenses, a list of whose names appeared in oar last Saturday's paper.
There were strong objections raised against the " Ship Inn," being re-licensed, particularly by the 1 ' Chief Inspector of Police, who described the bouse ns the worst conducted in the town,-— frequented by individuals of the lowest character. The police, when in pursuit of such people, generally sought for tin m there but they could easily elude their ptusueis by the facilities for esiape which lour entrances to the house afforded. The license however^ was granted to Mr. Tutty, notwithstanding that a charge of such serious nature was laid against his foimer conduct of the house by one of the presiding magistrates ! The house has formerly held a night license, but such a privilege has been withheld on this occasion. It was after considerable hesitation that the license was renewed for the "Caledom.w Hotel" in Fort Street. A charge was piefeired again«t Mr. McDonald by the Inspector of Police, for selling or allowing: to be sold spirituous liquors to ths natives. The evidenceof ft native , one ot the armed police, waa taken ; he stated that he had been served with rum at the " Caledonian" befoie he joined the police, but being unable to remember the day or month on which he had received it, the charge could not be fully substantiated as it could not be known whether the circumstance took place before or aftei'the OrJiaancefor prohibiting the tale of spirits to the natives came into operatuxn. Alter a caution from the bench to beware of allowing natives to be served with such liquors on his premiss^ Mr. McDonald was granted a license.
