THE COMET.
To the Editors of the Sydney Morning Herald. Gentlemen,— The Comet alleged to have been seen on Tueoday evening, was a Lunar Rainbow. I was coming down the harbor from Manly Cove, and saw its commencement and disappearance. At the moon rose, the rain falling from a thunder-cloud in S. W., was illumined by her, and us only the low « pair of the cloud was in tne act of decomposition, the lowportion of the Southern side of the arch. w*s onlyvsti ble. The secondary bow wat very dimly seen— but there could be no doubt as to the nature of the appearance. (JSp" Asks—" Has anybody Been the Comet ?" la reply it may be suggested, that a comet of so long a period may be retarded by having been attracted out of its regular orbit by some unknown planetary body in a very distant region, the observations of the lait two years having proved the existence of Several new planets ; or it may have passed (if very near the earth and having great velocity), duriug the late dark rainy weather ; or it may be visible only in the day-time, W.B.C. St# Leonard's, March 28, 1848.
" I resolve," says Bishop Bcveridge, '* never to speak of a man's virtues before his face, nor of his faults behind his back ; a golden rule ! the observance of which would, at ons stroke, banish flattery and defamation from the earth."
