PUBLICANS' LICENSES.

On Tuesday next, the 18th inst., the Magistrates will hold their Annual Meeting for granting Licenses to Publicans, We observe the names of no less than thirty-five applicants upon the list, twonty-two of whom are not at present engaged in that business. There is something strange, or worse than strange, in the large number of applications. Is it possible that there can be a chance of success, in a population of five thousand souls, for so many public houses — being about one I to every hundred and fifty persons, women i and children counted in. If it be so, the more the pity ; such a state of things calls loudly for amelioration. We will not suffer ourselves to think it, or to believe that our population is compooed of persons that way inclined, beyond the usual proportion that is to be found in every other community. Still we should be sorry to see temptation increased, or the chances multiplied of falling into those demoralising habits that are nurtured in the atmosphere of dram-shops and pot-houses. The following is a list of the applicant's names, amongst whom we notice many who would better serve the interests of the colony, by turning their atteniion to other occupations.
