MR. ROBERTS, THE MISSIONARY.
Le, Acting District Magistrate of Pwan-yu, publishes this distinct proclamation: — Whereas an Ameiican, named Roberts, having erected and established a Christian (or Sabbath-day) meetin.j-house in Tung-shih-keo-street, (near the execution ground), for the purpose of exphining ihe Scriptures and reforming the wicked : it appears that some time ago a number of the rabble endeavoured by force to obtain money from him ; but their demand not being complied with, they immediately made a gre«t disturbdncerr-smabhing all the doors, windo-vs, clfiiis, and tables, and carrying off all his clothes and (ffdctS. 1, the magistrate, have already enquired into the matter, and have apprehended Le-a-shang and eleven others, who will severally be prosecuted, as is on lecord. Now I have examined this Roberta, and find he is still as formeily residing; ifl the said hall, or Christians' meeting-house ; and as I reilly apprehend thut lawless vagabonds will assemble, under pretence ot hearing the Scriptures read, and again exrirr a .Iwturbance, it is proper to is«ue. this prohibitory decLuation. 1 nublibh this that the men of all nations may know that this Roberts who resides in the Christian raoetmi; hou*e, explains the Scriptures and exhorts to g-ood actions. You who desire to hear the Scriptures explained may go there quietly for that purpose* but those who do not wish to hear, must not, in pai ties of three or five, under false pretences go anl create disturbances. If any therefore dare to oppnee, as soon as the nutter is investigated, such peiions wnl certainly be appiehended, and severe panisiiment will follow. Not the slightest mercy will be shown ; let each, therefore, implicitly obey. Do not oppose a special edict. Taukwans. 27th year, 9th moou, 30th day (7th November, 1847.)
