TARANAKI.
Extracts from a Letier dated Dec. 27, 1847. Another pui chase ef land to the amount of ten thousand acres lias been effected ; so that, now, the Com pp.ny are in fail ly purchased, indisputable posseision, of upwaids of twenty nine thousand acres, together with every prospect of adding thereto, so soon as Government shall renew itsuuthorizition ; and which, presuming fiom hart Grey's despatch of June last, I entertain no doubt will be immediate. That despatch instructs our Governor " to retain in his own hands the exclmive management of all negotiations with the natives for the sale of their lands ;" so that, judging from the mafeteily and equitable accomplishment of the Government purchases here, hitherto, we congsatulate ourselves on the prudence and promise of the arrangement. — The Natives continue in a perfectly good, well disposed state, except on the part of some of tilt "Waitera tribes, who continue disinclined to part with their lands in that quarter of the settlement. But on no other point are there any tokens of disaffection manifested towards ei'her the Government or Settlers.-— The Setilera, generally, are in high spirits in consequence of ihe novr vastly meliorated condition of thenland prospects ; and no less by the promise of a very abundant harvest. Nowhere, nor at any time, did I ever witness finer fields of wheat than those I am daily led to look at here ; and all other crops bid fairly to gratify the farmer's expi ctations. — Though live stock of all kinds is rapidly on the inciease, prices aie hi^h , and all aie in demand. Bees thrive heie surprisingly. Two y ars ago there was only one hive of them in the district ; this year they tend towards a hundred, aud numbers of swarms, as in America, are taking to the woods, and, as there, the harbingers, we hope, of civilisation.— The quantity of land under crop and lv fallow tins year exceeds sixteen hundred acres, seven hundred of which are in wheat.
