Original Correspondence.
To the Editor of the New Zealander. , Sir,— l will not. await the publication of the next number of the Cross, to express my regret "that so gross a libel upon a great nation, as that which appeared in" its' number "of Saturday last, should have;, been published in its columns. I believe, I know the Frsncli nation sufficiently well to feel myself justifiedin asserting, thai if she should ever again become the enemy of England, she will be a brave and op ! en enemy, \ and not— as, the informant of the Southern Cross would t have it appear— a cowardly foe, affording supplies of gunpowder for the destruction of the subjects of an ally,; and that ally, the Queen of Great Britain ,j and 1 , tendering' assistance'™ case of Rebellion. I fearlessly ! assert^ todp that neither the noble and gallant Com- , mander of the Brilliante, wKich is the 'only French ship of war which has recently, visited the north, or any of his officers, ( would, so far forget themselves, as to be guilty of so ungentlemanly' an act,' or of any act, indeed, that would lower the dignity of their flag. France ceased to haye views on this country since the declaration of British Sovereignty, and I do not Believe that the King of the French would sanctiou treacherous proceedings for twenty New Zealands. My parentage, and my having formerly been in the diplomatic service of France, will, I hope, sanction my addressing-ypu on the presenc occasion. All 1 can do in addition, is to transmit to the parties interested copies of latt Saturday's Cross. I am, &c. Charles, Baron de Thierry. Auckland, Nov. 9, 1847.,
