Original Correspondence.

in the position set apart as the quarantine ground, and all general communication with the shore interdicted. Similar precautions to these were enforced by sheer necessity upon the New South Wales Government, only about six or seven years back ; previous to which there was no quarantine in force, and the inhabitants of Sydney were very near paying dear for their remissness, or rather the culpable negligenec of their government. One ship arrived, and then another, and another, all laden with immigrants, each with typhus fever, and other contagious disorders, on board. Numbers had died on the passage, and numbers more after being landed from the vessels at the quarantine ground. Had not the most sanatory regulations been adopted just in the nick of time, in the case of each of those vessels, the most disastrous consequences to the whole population could not fail to have resulted. As it was, the colony was put to a great expense— much greater than would have been had provision been duly made beforehand, by the previous institution of an efficient quarantine— and it took many months before the ships and people could be released with the remotest degree of saftety to themselves or the community. Hoping these few remarks may draw your attention to tht subject. I remain, &c« B.
