ROADS.
To the "Editor of the New Zealander. Sir,— As the subject of Roads has been, at various periods, brought under the notice of the public through the medium of your journal— l trust that I may now be excused in bringing before the notice of the proper authorities, the serious inconvenience which the several settlers on the Tamaki, between the College and Point England, sufler, in consequence of the unfinished and impassible state of the roau. I believe a memorial has been presented to his Excellency some nine months back respecting this road, and subsequently an offer by the settlers to cart the necessary stone, for drainage &c, gratuitously ; when an answer was recmed that a line
of road had been made at a great expanse, which, His Excellency was informed, would amply meet the wants of the settlers, and that no further outlay could be incurred in this direction! There is no doubt that a large expense has been incurred, but without affording us the means of communication with the trunk load, without passing through private property, which, at any time, may be put a stop to. Some five years have now elapsed since these faims were purchased from the government, under the faith of roads being opened, aud I think it is not too much, to ask now to have act ess to the leading mad to Auckland— besides His Excellency's word was pledged in answer to the memorial already mentioned, that the road in question should be immediately proceeded with : a portion has certainly been commenced where it branches from the trunk road, but from some unknown reason it was suddenly stopped, and remains now only to be looked at, when, probably, a sum of ten or twelve pounds, judiciously laid out, would make it passable. I am, Sir, your most obedient servant, A SurrEßEn. Tamaki, August 25, 1847.
