GOVERNMENT HOUSE BALL.
The Ball on Friday night last, was perhaps the most numerous and fashionable assembly that has been v itncsscd at Government House, sinoo the formal ion of the Colony. Mora than two hundred were present to join in the festivities of' the evening, and the brilliancy of the coup-d'eel was increased by the presence of the scarlets of two regiments, and the blues of two ships of ; war. With so. many gentlemen, the ladies were at a premium ; and as matter of course, looked the, more graceful and bewitching. The supper, elegantly set out, was laid in two rooms^ and, at about 12 o'clock done ample justice to. The band of the 58th Regt,, placed, in an ante-room, formed by enclosing, the verandah, fumiahed excellent music for the dance ; whilst the aQhbility of Ilia Excellency and Mrs. Groy, made every one feel at home. Among the distinguished guests wore His Excellency, Mr. Eyre, the Lieut-Governor, CoL and Mrs. Wynyard, Col. and Mrs. Gold, Major and Mrs. Wyatt, ♦ Major and Miss Marlow, Capt. and Mrs. O'Connell, j Capt., Mrs. and the Misses Murray, Capt., Mrs. and tho Misses Cockraft, Mr. and the Mrs. Shepherd, Mr. ' and Mrs. Ligar, Mr. and Mrs. Berry,, Mr. and Mrs. Donnelly, Dr. an* Mrs. Weekes, Mr. and Mrs. Barstow, Mr. and Miss Porter, Mr. and Mrs. Otttllwaite, Mr. and Mrs. Mathew, Mr. and Mrs. Rough, Mr. and' Mrs». Plummer, Mr. and Mrs. Lawlor, Mr. and Mrs, Braithwaite, the Baron and Miss De Thierry, Lieut, and Mrs. Snow, Mr. and Mrs. G. Graham, Mr, and t Mrs. Brown, Mr. and Mrs, Whytlaw, Mr. and- Mrs., Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Leech, Mrs. Reay, tho Misses, Davis, Miss Strang, Miss Cooper, &c, &c, &c. Dr. Sinclair, Mr. Swainoon, Dr. Johnston, Major Matson,, Capt. Hoseason and the Officers of H. M. S. Inflexible,, the Officers of the 58th and 65th, the Officers of H.'M.S. Dido, Dr. Pollen, Messieurs. Thomas, Pctre, Turner,, Beckham, Solway, Atkins, White, Young, Thatcher,, Boyd, Fergusson, De Moulin, Merriman, It. Wood,, Taylor, Cooper, Grahame, Woodhouse, Connell, Captains Austin and, Nagle, &c, &c. Dancing was kept up witli spirit until about? four o'clock, and everything and every, person may, be said to have " gone off well."
Government Gazette. — From, the* despatches, which will be found in our columns, published in the Gazette of yesterday, we learn that the aid granted to New Zealand from home, for the year 1847; is £38,805 155., covering the estimated deficiency of •£36,000, and allowing a probable surplus of /J2BGS 355. With the exception of the small sum retained for the civil list, the whole, under certain restrictions, is placed at the disposal of the Legislature, under the New Constitution, who arc warned, however, that they must not calculate upon the continuance, for more than a very brief period! of the Parliamentary Grant. The Troops. — The Thomas Lowry, having on board the second division of the 65th Regt., sailed for Wellington on, Sunday morning last. The head-quarters will embark this day on board the Pestonjee Bomanje, and sail for Port Nicholson in a day or two.
