Notes and Calendar for July.
July in this hemisphere corresponds to January at home, so we may consider it to be the first month of the rural year. The weather is generally variable in this month ; in some years it has been a line, in others a very wet one. In England, more rain falls in July than in any other month in the year ; there are not so many rainy dajs, but the rain is heavier. Last month was, in the Auckland district, a very wet one. The unusual quantity of G| inches fell. The temperature was high throughout, owing to the long continued north-east gales. However, every one anticipated much rain alter so dry a summer. The consequence is, that vegetation has been more active than at corresponding seasons ; and although gardeners may benefit by the rains, the excessive wet has been injurious to the clay soils, where the preparation for wheat and spring crops has been interrupted. On the Farm, fallow intended for turnips should receive a deep ploughing. Sow oats, barley, and grass seed. This is the season for malting and brewing, as well as for curing- and salting pork and beef. The store hogs may now be fattened off on meal or grains, and bran and potaoes mashed together. Sheep ought to have places for shelter during, the night and bad weather. Milch cows also require shelter at similar times ; and if confined at night some hay, good straw, or green food, should be given them. In the Garden.— Transplant and prune fruit trees. Make cuttings, layers, &c, although next month will do as well. Sow cabbages, carrots, parsnips, turnips, and early peas ; plant sea- kale, onions, leeks, and shallots. A few early potatoes may be planted, but cover with fern on cold nights until September.
