SUPREME COURT.
Yesterday ihe Supreme Court met, more in form than of necessity ; fur, we to rejoice to say, (he Judge found nothing but a maiden calendar. The grand jury attended, only to be dismissed— with the exception of two or three, who, we suppose, aware of the state of innocence ,in which the settlement has remained for the last three months, were themselves innocent enough to stay avray. The good old custom of presenting the Judge with his white gloves was not suffered by the Sheriff to fall into disuse. We trust that they may be again many times due, add that his Honor may be the man to receive them.
Tenders.-— Tenders are required by the Government, and will be received till noon on Monday next, for alterations to be made at the Government Farm House ; for supplies of Stationery, Provisions, Firewood, Maize ; and for Painters', Glaziers', and Smiths' Work, for the six months commencing Ist July next. Kawau.— Since our last notice, this Island has been visited by Messrs. Daniel and Kirk, two of the Missionaries by the John Wesley, whose preaching was attended by overflowing congregations. The former gentleman ably advocated the cause of Total Abstinence, and gave much satisfaction to the members of the Society. The Lord Bishop of New Zealand visited the Island on Saturday, the 22nd instant, and attended a meeting of the Total Abstinence Society held that evening, when his Lordship ably advocated and strongly urged the adoption of temperance principles, as calculcated to promote both the temporal and spiritual interests of the community. The Bishop performed Divine Service on Sabbatli morning and evening, to crowded congregations ; attending the Sunday School in the afternoon, to witness the distribution of the quarterly prizes for proficiency in learning, his Lordship presenting each child with a book, after which he delivered a very excellent address. The inhabitants intend celebrating the first anmversaty of the formation of a Total Abstinence Society on the Island, by a Public Tea Party, to be held in the School-house, on the 19th June, when it is expected that most of the inhabitants will be present.
