WANGANUI.
By the cutter Catherine Ann, Cemino, master, which anived in port yesterday, from "Wanganui, we have been put in possession of the following particulars. The authorities having received intimation of the intended occupation of Wanganui, as a military post, set to work to prepare for the reception of the soldiery. A body of natives and settlers were employed pieparing a stockade a short distance up the river. Soon aftei commencing operations, Mamuku, or Makatu, we know not which, came down and enquired what they were building for ; not receiving a satisfactory reply, he ordered the party oftj threw their tools and nails in the river, and threatened them with death if they persisted in preparing for the soldiers. On Sunday, H. 11. S. Calliope arrived off (he bar, and immediately commenced landing the troops in the boats belonging to the vessel and the Kathcnm Johnstone and the Catherine Ann, were likewise employed for that purpose. The remainder were disembarked on Monday. On Wednesday, the Government brig arrived, the armed police and the stores were im mediately landed. No opposition had been offered to the military up to the sailing of the cutter. A battery was to be erected on Shakespeare's Cli/F comimnding the town. The inhabitants were truly thankful to the Government for the protection thus timely afforded them. — Wellington Independent, Dec. 19.
