The New-Zealander. SATURDAY, MAY 30, 1846.
Be just and fear not : Let all the ends thou aims't at, be thy Country's, Thy God's, and Truth's.
His Excellency the Governor returned from the northward, in H. M. Steamer Driver, yesterday afternoon. We understand that all is quiet at the Bay of Islands. There was a great assemblage of Chiefs to meet His Excellency, but Heki was not present. By the American ship Navigator, from Hobart Town, we have received papers to the 12th inst, but they are perfectly barren of any important news— English or Colonial. From English intelligence, we learn that the French Government have fitted out an expedition against Madagascar, consisting of five large frigates with troops of infantry, marine artillery, and engineers. Two or three large storeships are to accompany them.. The Commodore will be Captain Defosses, of La Belle Poule. The command of the entire expedition is given to General Duvitier, who has served for a long time in Africa. We trust that thi« French armament is not destined to commit «tie disgraceful atrocities and outrages similar to those lately committed at Tahiti j the horrid details of which will be found in our extracts from the Sydney papers, received by the Mary, from Sydney, via Twofold Bay. The proximity of Madagascar to the continent of Africa, and in case of its entire conquest by the French,— -or even of obtaining a good footing on it, so as to establish fortifications, as a rendezvous for their ships of war on the very route to our Indian possessions, no doubt will excite the watchful attention of the English Government. The protection of the French Government is merely a cloak for the grossest acts of treachery, murder, and oppression. Hobart Town Markets.— Wheat 4s. 6d. to ss. per bushel ; Oats 4s. to 4s. 6d. J ditto ; Barley 4s. 9d. to ss. ditto.
