The New-Zealander. SATURADAY,JANUARY,I7,IB46.

BAY OF ISLANDS.

Be just and fear not: Let all the ends thou aims't at, be thy Country's, Thy God's, and Truth's.

His Excellency Governor Grey, returned this morning from the Bay of Islands, in the hon. E. I. C. sloop of war, " Elphinstone," and landed at seven o'clock under a salute from her. We have received the gratifying intelligence, that on Sunday last, a breach having been effected, the pah of Kawiti was stormed, and taken by assault. The natives endea voured twice to retake it, but were repulsed with great loss. The loss on our side was twelve soldiers killed, — but time will not permit us to ascertain more fully, authentic particulars.

The Government Brie: Viitoria arrived, on Tuesday last, from Hokianga, and the Bay of Islands, bringing about seventy persons from the former place who have quitted it, fearing the rebellious Natives, when driven from their Pah. During the past week the Town of Auckland has been daily excited and alarmed by rumours, from various directions, of the intent of the Natives to attack the town, during the absence of the troops. The circumstances ot Wetere and his tribe visiting Orakei, on Monday last, occasioned much apprehension, but the meeting was to consult on the recent acts of Katepa towards Wetere. Nevertheless, we consider that the Local Government should be on the alert, and watch, narrowly, every movement of the Natives, whatever may be their statements as to meetings and consultations among themselves.

By the Elizabefh Schooner from Wellington, the 20th December, we have received Papers but there had been no recent arrivals from England. Every thing was very dull at Port Nicholson and they were as yet unacquainted with the arrangements between the Colonial Office and the Company. The David Malcolm was to sail for Auckland on the 26th December.

The Isabella Anna arrived on Tuesday, from Sydney^ bringing Papers to the 27th December. The English Post Office Packet of the Ist September had not arrived. By this channel, we have received Adelaide Papers, to the 6th December. From the Adelaide Observer of the 6th December, we extract the following paragraph:— " The Sydney papers have lately been much occupied with speculations on the probability of a Governor General being appointed for the Australian Colonies in the person of Sir G. Gipps, and this supposition was apparently strengthened by the appointments of Captain Grey to New Zealand, and Major Robe to this place, both as Lieutenant-Governors ; but the Times states that it was distinctly announced by Ministers, that they entertained no intention of making a Governor-General, the appointments alluded to being only to meet the possible case of Captain Grey's declining to go to New Zealand."

New Public School. — With pleasure we observe a notjce in our columns of the opening of a Public Day School in addition to those already existing in Auckland. Every fresh opportunity for education, such as the present, will confer lasting benefits upon the rising generation of our Settlement. We hope to see this School properly appreciated and numerously attended, which may be anticipated from the moderate scale of charges set forth in the prospectus.
