BAY OF ISLANDS.
The Brig Victoria, on her voyage from Nelson and New Plymouth, called at the 3iay of Islands, and brought thence some of the Volunteers ; the remainder of which may be expected by the British Sovereign, early in the ensuing week. ' From most authentic information, we have much pleasure in assuring our readers thai (here is dissension in the enemy's camp. Heke i.s desirous of peace; but the aged rebel Kawiti, declaring that the juvenile instigators of the lamentable pro-
ceedings at the Bay ot Islands, have not yet been sufficiently punished for acts of which he forewarned them, will not yet listen to the terms. It is not, as was supposed, Heke, who will not make peace : — he is ready to come to any terms ; but it is old Kawiti, who says — on information, we can fully rely — that the young, rash, chiefs, meaning Heke and others, having began the insurrection, that they ought to be punished well for their folly. - In the late skirmishes Heke, put forward, in the foremost ranks, some of his Hokianga allies, who suffered severely in the fray, and they now are taunted by Kaiviti for their ridiculous interference. The consequence has been that that tribe has joined Nene Waka, who — most fortunately for Europeans, and much to his honor— is now, to our certain knowledge, held in high estimation by his own countrymen, for his bravery and honourable consistency, while Heke is retrograding, in their opinion, and is designated a cur, — "Jcuri." The troops have fallen back to Russell, which is about being fortified by intrenchments; and until further reinforcements J arrive, no hostile operations will ensue. ] The barque Regia is expected from Sydney, with munitions of war, among which is a howitzer cast in Sydney, to be portable. It was tried by Sir George Gipps> and found to answer remarkably well.
