The New-Zealander

Be just and fear not: Let all the ends thou aims't at, be thy Country's, Thy God's, and Truth's.

The barque British Sovereign has arrived at the Bay of Islands from Sydney, bringing Colonel Wynyard, Captain Laye, Lieutenants Dressing, Hay, Petley, and Page ; Ensign Wynyard ; Assistant-Sur-geon Philson ; and two hundred and fourteen rank and file of H. M. 58th Regt. By the British Sovereign was received the English mail whichleft the Downs on the 19th May, in the Hoogley, for Sydney. The intelligence by this mail is of but few days later date than that received by the Racehorse. We have received English papers to the 14th May ; they contain no additional news of interest to the extracts in our last number. The grant to Maynooth College appears to be the absorbing topic of interest in the English journals. To the end of April, there had been presented to the House of Commons,

forty-six petitions, with 15,483 signatures, for the bill; and seven thousand, six hundred and twenty-nine petitions, with 982,869 signatures, against it. Lord Francis Egerton had retired from South Lancashire, and Mr*T. B. Macaulay had resigned his seat for Edinburgh, in consequence of their constituents disapproving their support of the grant.
