SPONGE.
This most useful and valuable article of commerce is found, most abundantly in the eastern part of the Mediterranean, and in the Grecian Archipelago, and is a lucrative export from Turkey. It abounds also, on the coasts of New Zealand, and we have no doubt, that if the attention of the natives was directed to the occupation, they, would, by diving near rocks, to which it is attached, obtain much very easily, and such an undertaking would be very remunerative, especially, if of good quality, on account of its great value in Europe. To encourage such enterprize among the colonists, a premium of Five Pounds "Will be given to the person producing on the Ist January, 1846, the finest piece of sponge, authenticated to be grown, or found, on the shores or rocks of New Zealand. ' These two most liberal premiums, we are authorised to state, are generously offered by His Excellency the Governor, and as soon as persons are known to be actively embarked and engaged in those pursuits, the premiums, with other particulars, will be more publicly notified, for the day of exhibition, on the Ist January, 1846.
