FINED £50.

INTOXICATED MOTORIST. A fine of £50 and costs was imposed on James Oliver Scott (Mr L. A. Charlcs) in the Ashburton Magistrate's Court, when he appeared' becharged with being intoxicated fore Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., while in charge of a motor-car, He was also prohibited from taking out a motor-driver's license for three years. The proceedings arose from an accident which occurred on the Alford Forest road, Ashburton, when a car driven by Scott collided with on driven by Mr D. A. Gunn, of New Brighton. Scott pleaded not guiRyCounsel for the defence said that he understood that Scott would he charged with negligent driving, but he was not prepared to go on with that case. The first charge was then taken. Senior-Sergean I. II. Mathieson said that on Sunday evening a car occupied by accused and two other men, named1 McGinn and Urquhart, was driven along Alford Forest road at 7.30. Scott, who was driving on the right-hand side of the road, at about 30 miles an hour with only one light attached to his car, collided head on with a car driven b.y D. A. Gunn, a land broker, of Christchurch. Gunn saw the car approaching and he pulled up, but Scott ran into him. As a result oi the impact, Mr Gunn was thrown on one side of the road, while Urquhart was thrown on to the other, and Scott was pinned behind the wheel. When the poliee arrived at the scene,' Scott was leaning against the fence, in a drunken con'dition. There was a two-gallon empty jar in Scott's car. Evidence was given by Constable M. O'Grady and D. A. Gunn, and Senior-Ser-geant Mathieson. •' The Magistrate asid that Scott I shouldl not be trusted with a 2ar, 1 and imposed the penalty mentioned, | giving accnsed one week in which \ to pay. i —
