LONDON, March 27. \ Chinese news received at Down- j ing street shows that the situation j in Nanking and Shanghai is less j 1 critical, mainly owing to the pres- j ence of British and other defence forces, but the position of foreigners in other centres, notably Chungking and Icharrgsha is most precarious.
