LORD ASKWITH ON MAKING LIFE EASIER.

: EDISONIAN PHILOSOPHY. "If it is true, as Sir William Beveridge says, that the white races are doclining, then inventors must come to the aid of the white man," said Lord Askwith at the annual banquet of the Holborn Restaurant last night of the Institute of Patentees. It was only by invention, Lord Askwith went on, that the white thing successful for himself. It was man ' might be able to do somecalculated that £3,000',00Q.0OO, or 20 per cent. of all the gokl in the world, was being used in the In1 ventions of Mr Edison, so that if Mr Edison was not a great inven- 1 tor he certainly was a hard worker and got other men to invent for him. (Laughter.) f The Philosophy of Mr Edison was that machines and more machines were needed in order to change the ' sl avery and drudgery of domestic j life,. There was, of course ,the slo- ] gan, "Preach to the slaves ; there is j nothing needed but to break your bonds." The slogan of Mr Edison was that as much work as possible j by new ihventors was needed to se- ' cure mental and bodily freedom. , Another great inventor was Mr , Morris ,of Oxford, the successful ! Englishman who had told us that ! the great point was to get hold of a ; good thing and to pbtain repeat or- ] ders as fast as you coold. To that slogan was, of pourse, the j antithesis, "Not a minute on the j day, not a penny off the pay." (Lau- ] ghter.) "7 To that slogan Mr Edison ] undoubtedly would reply, "Work as hard as you can during the short twenty-four hours and the pennies will take care of themselves.
