BLUNT AND DEMPSTEP, MAKE FINE GTAND. „ UMPIRE LEAVES FIELD.

MELLINGTON, March 25. The second iest between New Zealand and the Melbourne Club eommenced to-day iu perfect weather. The outstanding feature was centuries to Blunt (104) and Dempster (128), and the faiiure of the remainder, McGirr (39), Lowry ;■ (13) and Page (11) being the only others to get double figurcs. The damage was' done inostly by Ebeling who took five wickets for 75 runs off 16 overs. At the drawing of sturaps Melbourne had lost one wicket for 17 (Hendry, out 13). An unpleasant incident occured a few minutes afiter 5 p.m. when Ransford appealed against the light, ■he shadow thrown across tlie field proving most disconcerting to^the batsmen, half of the pitch being in light and half in shadow. Despite Lowry (the N.Z. captain and wicketkeeper), admitting difncuity in taking the ball and xnost of the fieldxng side supporting Lowry, the umnire, Mr Waddy, raaintained that the light was still good for play. Taking umbrage at a reraark from Onyons, a Melbourne batsman, Waddy threw off his eoat and left ihe field, the other umpire, batsmen, j and fielders following. Mr R. Bock, • president of the Wellington Um- 1 oires' Association, went out to take Waddy's place with the umpire Mr | R. E. Twitton, but neither batsmen | nor fieldsmen reappeared. No fur- 1 tlier 'play took place for the day. I NEW ZEALANDFirst Innings. R. C. Blunt, c Campbell, b Ebeling . . . . 10 T. E. Mills, b Ebeling 2 ■M. L. Page, b Rodgerson . . . . 1 1 H. G.
