SHOOT TO KILL
ITALIANS OPEN FIRE, j SHANGHAI, March 23. ! Italian marines fired on Shantung 'roops trying to- break the boundary, lcilling three and wounding j Ivvclve. , There was a huge explosion in { ihe native city on the hoarders of I fhe settlement. It is believed to have I been at the headquarters of the Shantung forces. Neighbouring buildings are burning fiercely. * A shell passed over the Bund and exploded, fortqnately^anding in- the river narrowly misring an Italian launch. The shooting is dying down at Chapei where the Nationalists are in full control, but it has broken out on the other side of the river opposite the Bund. Residents in the neighbourhood of the Szechuen road have withdrawn to the heart of the settlement. They were conveyed in fire waggons and ambulances. Attempts to cripple foreign newspapers have been partly successful. NUNS BACK TO SAFETY. General relief was felt when seven nuns staggered bravely into the settlement, hring children from the hurnt orphanage. There was^a pathetic sight when the nuns, ini cluding several Chinese sisters, ujiaccompanied by male escorts, arrived at the harricades followed and 'surrounded by over three hundred white-faced, silent. terrified children, a mixtnre of all nations, Eurasians predominating.
