BRITISH LEADERS CAUGHT IN A TRAP. j Received Wednesday, 7 p.m. I SHANGHAI, March 23. j In response to the Nationalist request to the municipal authorities for a consultation/in order to avoid friction, Colonel Heywood, Chief of the Intelligence Staff, Major Johnson, iCommissioner-General of Shanghai, and Viscount Gort, Chief of Staff, conferred with the Nationalist commander in the native city. When returning, escorted by Nationalists, they were held up for an hour by studeiit demonstrators pro: testing against the intrusion of British officers into China. Ap attempt was made ot search Colonel Heywood, and his chaffeur was beaten. Gunmen arrived and the crowd took i panic. The British officers were res- I cued in fhe nick of time by a sec- j ond escort sent by the Nationalist commander. It is officially announced that as ! the result of negotiations between | Chiang Kaishek and Pishouchen, j Ihe latter has agreed to surrender Ihe Kuomintang flag which had been hoisted at his headquarters. Many thousands of Shangtungese at Chapei and else where are still unaware of his action. Regular Nationalist troops are now approaching Chapei which they expect to occupy to-morrow. !
