A GHASTLY SIGHT.

— Pre3.I AcBQciatlon-

(Australian and N.Z. Press Association.)

» * AT THE MOUTH OF THE - GUNS^? J-

(Cabla-

— Oopyriglit.)

Received Wednesday, 12.32 a.m. ; SHANGHAI, March 22. j The eeriest scene in the set- i tlement boundaries all night j long are British Tommies taking turns to man the machine guns pointed at groups of Shantung troops. The other side of the boundary is a ghastl'y sight. Early in the morning a party of White Russians, deserting from the Northern forces asked permission to enter the settlement, but one decided to return to blow up an armoured car lest it fall into the hands of the Southerns.' Ten minutes later he retried to enter the settlement with a companion, but Shantung soldiers stopped them, forced them to kneel on the roadway and beheaded both. The heads were mockingly stuck on pickets within a few yards of the British machine guns. Meantime the shooting continued incessantly.
