SAN FRANCISCO, March 21. A serious epidemic of influonza and mumps has developed on board the Army hransport Chateau Theirry, carrying nine hiyidred men destined for China. Five already are dead, and 69 are scriously ill. The vessel is making full speed for here. Army ambulan'ces are yraiting to transfer the sick to a local hospital. The transport, hesides troops, carries 125 officers and their wives and thirteen members of Congress, en route to China to investigatc tlie position. The seriousncss of the epidemic is strcsscd hy Ihe War Dcpartment, particularly sincc thc vessel Ijas Jieen traveliing from New York since the 811) March, and the greatest amount of sfckness oceurred while the vessel was in eentral American waters making a stop at any port impossihlc due lo lae.k, of adequate hospilal foeliltles.
