KOPPERT AND KIBBLE WHIT E IN THE KING'S FIFTY.
ll'r
TRENTHAM, March 22. When shooling commenced narning the \ weather was beautiful- ■\ Jine, sunny, and practically windless i'or the first half-hour. and then Trentham's notorious ^ "Trixie' awoke all her spirits and oei them to work upon the men's scores. Little puffs came in unenpectedly from ihe right reax-, with fluctuations to the left that spelt disaster to even tlic most watchful mai'ksnian. Occasionally one would get through in a still patch. Such a one was Poweil (Akarana), who, disdaining the wastefulness of "sighters," hopped right off at the 800 yards stage ' of the Otago martch and plunked a whole string of tens into the "bull." Pedersen, a tyro froni P>etone, got 49, Howard (Diomede) made 4S, heating H. Cromie (Ashburton) and McAllum (Northbank) on the count back. Drennan and Koppert (both of Oamaru) with R. J. King and H. Donald (Opaki club mates). Mclver- (Petone) and R. Carter, made 47, while 46's were fairly numerous, inciuding West, the leader last night. He has oniy to hold steadily at the 900 yards to head the King's Hundred. Roots got 44 on, and is now four points behind West. The other side of the story is a harrowing one. In one case a man never hit the target. Sorne of the best-known shots wer'e quite content to get into. the forties. Many equally prominent_ were in the6thirties, and xnost had ciphers on their cards. Towards noon the weather grew colder tho'ugh fine, and gathering clouds with a following fishtail wind of very uncertain strength plajred havoc with the scores at the second (900 yards) stage of the Otago Match. Veale added (4G to the 44 notched^at 800 yards • and will probably win the match. Taylor, of Karori, put one sighter in the bank and then sent ten^ into the black dlsc. the only possible recorded at this range. The three leader^, West, Roots, and Whiteman, had a rough passage at 800 yards. All shooting at the same time, they were caught by the same troublesome shifts of wind. having to go out as much as 10 degrees right, and each had a miss in his string of figures. Roots finished with 37, making him 81. for the match; West, 3!5— 81, and Whitefnan ended up with 83. Meantime D. Keir, who, had come back form the 800 yards with 42, added 44, bringing his match total to 96, and liftihg him into the leadership for the Belt with 478, followed by West 476, Whiteman 475, and Roots 474. There does not appear to' be any likely to displace these. The following fire in the King's Prize Match to-xjiorrow, 10 shots at 900 yards: — Keir 478, West 476. C. Whiteman 475, Roots 474, R. H.
