Founded in 1848 the Province of Otago will to-day celebrate its 79th anniversary The committee of tbe Oamaru Operatic Society met in Bartrum's tea.-rooms last evening, Mr J. W. Petrie presiding. Mr S. Hook was appointed producer for the next production. The selection of this year's opera was left in the hands of a sub-committee. The outstanding feature of the ahoriginal census taken in Australia at June 30 last was the remarkably accelerated decline in the race. During the year the black population fell from 62,394 to 59,296. The nett proceeds of the cricketer Macartney's recent testimonial match in Sydney amounted to £2590. For the Colonial Institute's essay competition for 1926, there were 73 essays. The subject for the essay in Class A was: — "Discuss the importance of the years 1880-1890 in the history of the British Empire." First prize: Janie V. R. Cooper, Grammar School for Girls, Watford Herts. Second prize to be divided between Myrtle Darey, Grammar School for Girls, Watford Herts; and Alexander Connack Jessep, Waitaki Boys' High School, Oamaru. Among those who received honourable mention were:— Class A Erle Brockland Dalmer. . Waitaki Boys' High Sichool, Oamaru; Kelvin Braush Hunter, St. Andrew's Colfege, Christchurch.
