IRVINE AND FAMILTON CUP.S. SATURDAY'S FINALS. ' The finals of the Irvine and Familton Cups were played on the Oamaru Club's courts before a good attendance of the puhlic on Saturday afternoon, the winners being Miss I. Romans and Mr G. Sumpter. Miss Perkins, who won the Irvine Cup last year, is at present in Christchurch and did not defend the title, IRVINE CUP. In the semi-tinal Miss " King defeated Miss V. Nichols 9 — 6, and met Miss Romans in the final, the latter winning a line match 6 — 3, 6 — '3. Miss King played with more confidence and vim in the early stages of the first set and sent iii som'e hard drives to her opponent's backhand. Miss Romans, however, gradually played into form and by fast, good length drives forced Miss King into mistakes. Coming to the net, Miss Romans displayed excellent volleying anH smashing ability and took the first set 6—3. In the second set Miss Romans drove harder, taking the set, 6—3, and the match. # Miss King put up a very creditable performance in beating Miss^ Gibb and Miss Nichols and her play in the final was a fine fighting effort. FAMILTON CUP. For the Familton Cup, M'Gregor beat Mulligan 6—2, 6 — 2 and met' G. Sumpter in the semi-final, the latter winning 6 — 2, 6 — 3. The other semi-final between C. Mollison and K. Familton was ,a long match marked by steadiness with occasional flashes of fast play. Familton had a good lead in the first set which was ultimately won by Mollison. 8 — 6, the second set also going in his favour 6 — 4. The final was closely followed by the spectators, the contestants, Mol- ; lison and Sumpter, being evenly j matched. Mollison heid the upper : hand in the first set mainly by ac- | curate placements and good passing i shots when Sumpter came into the net, and ran out a winner 6 — 4. In j the second set Sumpter appeared to be tiring and stayed at the hase line. His opponent played the same game, j and refrained from going to the net | when he could have done so to advantage. Sumpter took; the^ set with the loss of only three games. Playing great tennis, Sumpter had matters very much his own way in the deciding set which he won without losing a game. Mollison made a lot of mfstakes, missing several fairly easy shots while his opponent returned winners from all sorts of | positions. The inatch, and with it ! the trophy, went to Sumpter, 4 — 6, j 6 — 3, 6—0. 1 PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. 1 In congratulating the players on } the high standard of tennis shown, | Mr H. B.
