-CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. A feature of the test match, New Zealand v. Melbourne to-day was the sensational performance of W. E. Merrjtt the young leg-break and googiy bowler who took seven wickets for 88 runs. Melbourne's innings yielded 429 runs, the batsmen being well over all the bowling except Meritt's. As a matter of fact the bowling was lamentably weak, far below test standard, and little better than may be seen any Saturday in club cricket. _ Cunningham and Read took the remaining wickets, but neither bowled really well, and Alloo, Blunt and Gallichan were quite unconvincing, Of the Australians, Hendry, Jfewell, Ransford, Sandford and T. Armstrong gave flne displays of versatile batting. MELBOURNE— Fxrst Innings. B. A. Onyons c Oliver, b Merritt 47 R. Jewell, b Read .... . . . 50 H. L, Hendry, b Cunningham ... 51 V. S.
