H ' St. Patrick's annual concert will be held in the Opera House on Wednesday night next. A glance ! through the programme which is | advertised in this issue, will show ! that the public is being treated to j a first-class entertainment. Seats may be booked at The Bristol as i from to-day. i There is a tendency on the part of son'ii; school committees to incur expenditure or liability in anticipation of securing a subsidy from the Education Department on moneys raised by voluntary contribution. At the last meeting of the Tara- | naki Education Board a letter was j received from the department defi- j nitely stressing that this practice must not be continued. The appearance of a warship off Oamaru early last evening led a numher of people to imagine that it was the Renown on its way south to pick up the Duke of York and his narty. Subsequently it was definitely learnt that the vessel seen was the Diomede, a unit of the New Zealand Navy," which had been berthed at "Timaru for a few days. Arising out of an accident to a nurse who slipped and broke an arm, the polishing of the floors at the Palmerston North Hospital has been discontinued. Several members of the Plospital Board, to whom the fact was reported, commented that there had been too much polishing, making the floc:-s really dangerous.

One returned man, who had been oiit of work for a considerable time, secured a horse and cart, bought vegetables at a city auction, and set on a round of the suburbs. At one house where he called a girl came to the door. The latter called to hcr mistress inside the house: "Do you want any vegetables?" "Ts ' R the Chinaman?" came a languid reply. "No. it is a gentleman," said the girl. "Then we don't want any thing," replied Mrs Auckland. \ Spoaking af the opening of thc new schnol do'ntal olinic at Auckland on Saturdav, Mr T. A.
