[To The Editor.j e Sir, — I am glad for his own sake that the Premier has allowed himself to be drawn at last, as it has been evident from the start that he was opposed to the compulsory clause, and nevei agreed to it but was jockeyedi into it at the last moment without his concent or approval. He demanded an assurance from the Board that their finance was in perfect order and assured that it was, but it was not, until the Board, at fthe request of their friends in Tooley Street. had hypothecated the whole twelve months output to them, as security for the issue of their letters of credit, without which the Board could not have raised: a penny piece or functioned at all. This hypqthecation, is the essence of complete control for 12 months and it would appear that the Premier did not even know it was in contemplation and looks as if the information has been impropeiiy withheld from him. If therefore, the Premier was misled, he is more than justified in exposing their actions instead of adopting their childish arguments, circulated gratis to the 58,000 suppliers, through the medium of their newspaper, the New Zealand Dairy Exporter. One of the arguments in defence of the butters fiaSco at Home is that the condition of trade has much to do with the lack of demand but it does not appear to affect the sale of Danish at a relative excess of at least 20s per cwt. in price or the keen demand for Australian and other butters to the neg'lect of our own. There is no doubt that an unholy mess has been made and this is nothing more than was expectedi and it is a p'ity innocent people who confided in the Government should be allowed to suffer. If the Premier wishes to retain the confidence of ! dairymen, he should purge the Cabinet of his opponents, who are well known, and not allow the tail to was the dog. — I am etc.,
