DESTROYER SKIPPER'S INITIATIVE.
( Gable—
SHANGHAI, Marclx 10. _ "V7e cannot hold out much longer; it is essential to send help/5 was the dramatic message signalled from tlxe Britisli warchip Wolsey during the rioting at Wuhu on Otli March. The message was picked up by the destroyer Emerald' slationed at Ninking. Instead of rclaving the appeal to Shanghai and awaiting the Admiral's ordex*s tbe Emerald acted on its own initiative and signalled the Admiral: "Proceeding to Wuhu , immediately," and was alrcady on the way when the Admiral's orders supporting jts action reached Nanking. It appears that the Wolsey land-, ed a party to protect the evacuation of women and children and was then forced to land another body to subdue the rioting. The rioters. realising the smallness of the Emerald's forces, stoned the sailors. Apparently tlie trouble later died down.
