WAIANAKARUA NOTES.

LSpccial to Xoiia Otago Times.]

The Weather. During the last week this district has been suffering from two extremefe of weather. During the week-end we had weather equal to any during the summer, but yesterday it changed and we are now getting a touch of winter. The cold has brought a slight drizzle with it, so we have something to be thankful for, as this place is badly in need of rain. From all accounts there is going to be a scarcity of winter feed, as the root crops are almost wholly a failure. The Harvest. -Most of the farmers have now got their crops cut, and the majority of them have it stacked. So iar there have been no thresliing operations carried out, so I cannot give any returns. Tennis. Owing to harvest operations employing most of the young men until a late hour, tennis is now practically a thing of the past. Occasionally a few girls come along, but as the nights are now much shorter there is very little playing done. Although there is not much actual playing, the tennis club is still very much to the fore. It is the intention of the club to put down asphalt courts for p.ext season, and they are out to make as much money as possible to pay for them. They intend borrowing the money on non-intcrest bearing debentures. A deputaiion canvassed the district | recently and met with a resdy re- j ception, so the club has decided to j proceed in the niafier. To provide ! a sinking fund to repay the debeh- I tures, it has been decided to hold i a series of entertainmeiits through- \ out the year. The first of these was : held last Friday evening. It took i the form of a social and dance. As j a rule Waianakarua dances are I noted for .having a .surplus of lady dancers, but last Friday's was an exception to the rule. On account ! of this, the M.C. (Mr Noel Robertson) had no trouhle in getting the dances under way as there was keen rivalry among the young men. i Altogether a most enjoyable even- { ing was spent by everyone and the ! tennis club's funds were consider- j ably augmented. The music was ' again supplied gi-atuitously by local i players. . " s Electric Light. The Power Board's representative = is at present canvassing the district to see what response there will be ! towards , taking the electric light ! should the power. go through . to Hampden. Quite a number of settlers have signed up. but others are waitinu. t!r. .... .
