MOTOR ASSOCIATION.

\ MEETING OF GOMMITTEE. | The committee of the North Ota-' i go Motor Association met last evening. Present: Messrs J. S. Duncan > (chairman), P. W. Borrie, R. D. i j Cox, F. H. Bryant, H. J. Jenkins, J. [ S. Genge, D. L. Patterson, H. J. i Cart wright, H. T. Edney and CapI tain H. S. Cox. The chairman said the questiori ! of a camping ground was held up | owing to the plans having gone ! astray. ; • The secretary said it would be necessary to forward the proposals to the Borough Councii as early as possible as the estimates would shortly be drawn up. Pieferring to the Kakanui Beach Road, the secretary stated that it had been suggested that 30 residents should contri'bute £1 each towards the cost of effecting an improvement. The chairman thought that as the Waitaki County Counicil were drawing rates in that area, something should be spent on the road. Mr Patterson said it was a matter that visiting motorists should take up. Mr Borrie: Put up a toll gate. The chairman: Those using the road should be prepared to pay for it to a certain extent. The secretary said that the iotal cost would be about £90, one-third of which would probably be paid for by the County Councii. It was ultimately decided to invite subscriptions to carry out the necessary work. The chairman reported that the Motor Cycle Club had agreed to j amalgamate with the Association | and he did not think they would | have any cause to regret the step. j The secretary stated that he had I attended the Otago Motor- Club's 3 hill-climbing tests last Saturday \ and thought it a very simple thing | to run. Mr Malcolm gave an inter- j esting outline of the manner in j whiich the fixture was handled. i The chairman mentioned tbat 1 as j Mr Passmore, of the Otago Motor { Club, had agreed to bring along the | electrical apparatus, they should have little difficulty in running the j tests. ] It was resolved to organise a. hillclimbing competition, April 2nd he- ; Ing agreed upon as a iuitable date. j Thei South Island Motor Union j forwarded particulars of camping 1 nla--es at Nelson and Ashburton. I

Mr H. S. Orbell wrote suggesting j that motorists should give way to j racehorses heing led and from the ' racecourse and that more consid- \ eration he given to sheep and drov- 1 ers bn public roads. i

Mr Borrie asked why motorists should take the wrong side of the road for the sake of racehorses? Ihe. Secretary said he had never: a experieniced any difficulty with racehorses on the North Road. Mr Jenkins remarked that motorists were not as considerate as they might be. If a drover were given a slight warning he would clear a j prih for the car. He thought they i should reply that they were in sym- ] pathy with the latter and suggest- ] ed meeting race-horse owners to go 1 fully 'into the matter. \ A motion in that directlon was ! carried. j The chairman stated that the re- j gulations governing stray stock at night needed tightening up. At Hampden this was heing done and as a result one woman had to dispose of her cattle. Several members related having ' met wandering stock at night and after a brief discussion the subject was dropped. Fifteen new members were elected. . Messrs Duncan and Malcolm were appoinled delegates ta attend the quavterly meeting of the South Island Mctor Union at Christchurch on March 25th.

Arrangements in connection with a' run to the Waikouaiti motor .races on March 26 were discussed i and it was decided to make a start from Oamaru punctually at 12.30 p.m. The question of adopting the system whereby members' subscrip. tions are, payable from the date of election, instead of from the beginning of the financial year, was discussed and approved. It was stated that this scheme had been successfully introduced by the South / Canierbury Association and there was every likelihood of the Otago Motor CJ.ub adopting a similar system. It was deci'ded to write to the Bcrough Councii suggesting that the hy-law relating to the rule of the road he amended to provide that traffic must keep to the extreme left of the road or as near as possible.
