SCHOOL COMMITTEE. I
! WAIMATE, Yesterday. At the monthly nieeting of ti Waimate District Higli Scliool Con imttee, there were present : — Messi R. B. Hurst (chairman), W. 1 i W- Anderson. G. Campbel | W. Mrs O'Brien said that slie thoughi it inadvisable to raise the money "bj the children paying one shilling each. as some parents were not particulai whether their children's teeth were attended to or not. Mr Paul stated that he was in favour of liolding. eifcher a concert, fete, or garden party, to raise the desired amount. Mr Pegler (headmaster) was in favour of a concert or garden fete, but said that nothing could be done at present, in view of tlie fact that so many concerts were now being arranged for charities, etc. Mr Hurst said that he was quite eonvinced that the money would be forthroming from tlie public. The question of a suitable room would have to be considered, and it was a question of what sum the committee thought would be within their reach. He thought that afthr the parents were educated to the benefits' the children clerived from having a dental clinic at the scliool, the Is ' per head would be forthcoming. , J'' was resolved that tlie committee intorm the Borougli Council that they would undertake to subscribe £40 annually towards the expenses of a dental clinic.
WAR RECQRD FOR SCHOOL. Mr Hall representing the Returned boidiers Leagu'e, visited the committee, with a view to their purchasing an lllummated war record for the scliool. _ He explained that the chief points of interest in the recent Great War were represented. The purchase was agreed upon 1 CORRESPONDENCE , The Education Board wrote regardmg the letting of the sehool^ for/ entertainments. The secretary rfemarked that that apphed mostly to country schools. I he letter was received. The resignation of the headmaster was read, and Hr Hurst instracted the secretary to place ou record Mr Pegler s valuable services. He liad mounted higher in liis profession, and Iie (tlie chairman) wished Mr Pegler . every happiness in his new spherT of work. Mr Pegler returned thanks to the chairman for his expression of appioval, and said that his feelings on gomg to his new-1 *position were very iTnxed. However, -it - was promotion, and it was his idea that it would have been very unwise for him not to have' accepted it. The salarj' was no better than he received at this school, but owmg to the high grade of the VYest Christchurch District High bchool, he would be placed in the lnghest position in the Canterhuiw district. Mr Pegler thanked the committee for maldng their stay such a pieasant one. HEADMASTER' S REPORT. The headmaster 's report stated that the * average attendances for the 'five weeks ended March 5th were ■— boys 263.5, girls 284.4, total o47.9; secondary, boys 57, girls 56.2, total 113.2 (a record for Waimate.) Mrss G M. Satterthwaite, one of ihe
junior nustresses, had been absent fbnce Februai-y 14, owing to illness, her place being taken by Miss A. . Meredith. _ Misses I. L. Richardson and K. Lindsay were appointed to the staff as 'probationers, as from Febmary lst. Nurse Atkinson, of the Education Department's medical staff, visited the school from February 14 to 38 mspecting the children, in readiness for a later visit of Dr Phillips. VISITOR'S REPORT. Mr Wilson intimated that he ha'd visited. the school, and advised the committee of the need of several small repairs to doors, etc. — The report was adopted.
SCHOOL PICNIC. Witli reference to the recent school excursion to Timaru, the balance sheet was read as follows : — Receipts : ColJections £5 15s 6d, railway refund j £18 2s 8d; total, £23 18s 4d.- The j total expenditure amounted to £3.9 ' 15s 3d and with £2 10s yet to be ' I in^^i there would be a profit of £b J2s lld. ' +i ?iUr>s^ a®ked Mr Pegler to I tnanlv the four masters who so ; capably attended to the sports at the recent excursion held in Timaru. He also wished to convey his thanks to the secretary, who was called upon to do so much extra work with regard ro the different arrangements for the excursion, and also to Mrs O'Brien in connection with the baby show. Mr George proposed that a letter i -r t0 tlle ^Wmate Suvei Band their services.' He thought it only riglit to make the secretary an allowance for all the work which was done by him for the excursion. It was agreeed to donate the sum of £2 2s to Mr Paul.
