Tub Mayor made the pleasing announcement at tho Borough Council meting last night that tho estimates of receipts and expenditure for the year provided for a reduction of Is in the £in tho rates. This town has groaned so long under ft load of heaped up rates, that the announcement will como like tho removal of a nightmare to ratepayers. Wo are awaro that a number of ratepayers were doubtful of the ability of tho Council to do so, but tho members of tho present Council know what they are doing, and they would not make the estimate \{ they were not sure they could work it out Tho piescnt Council have done good work for the town, although occasionally they havo come in for unmerited abuse. They hcvvo worked steadily towards an end, and having aohioved it, they are entitled to tho thanks of tho ratepayers for tho good services they have rendered. With a decrease in rates we may expect a riso in values, and if this eventuates, a still further reduction may bo made. Tho annual meeting of tho N.O.Ai and l\ Association takes place to-day at 1.30 p.m. Tho Rev. VV. Thomson, of Palmerston North, will preach, morning and evening, in »St. Paul's Church to-morrow. The secretary of tho Agricultural Associa lion requests in to intimatu that the names of Messrs C Nichols, J A. Taylor, and J. B. Taylor have boon unfortunately omitted from tho published list of subscribers. There nr* now 137 men on tho loohl Labor Bureau books. The Government have intimated to Sergeant o'CJr.uly that they will tako five men for work at Galatea, a place 33 miles north of Kotorua, and application by those willing to go must bo made at once. Mr Tohn Eddingtou, of Kakanui, has sent us ii boiling of potatoes, grown on tho Awamoa estate, whore he has a large area of tho variety. Four years ago he got three potatoes from Mr Brownlco, which he carefully planted, and has kept tho produce continuously. Mr Kddington will be careful that tho tubers get into tho hands of good growers. They aro named Brownloo's Derwents, Mid woro originated on Markland farm, Cave Valley. They aro of a bright red color, medium sizad, shallow eyed, and uniform in shape, tho flesh cloar and whito, boiling very mealy. The new strain combines good quality with a largo yield. Mr Kddington estimates his crop this year at two tons per aero over tho ordinary kind which ho has growing on the same ground. Last year tho yield was cloven tons per aero. Mr Eddington is tending eomo bags to town for exhibition. Captain Mainland, Lieut. James, Foreman Coupcr, and Fireman Rowlands, were I present at tho mooting of the Borough Council last night when the Mayor presented them with their long s«rvice medal and bars. He did not keep Iftto hours, and had been looking for work in various directions. He had boon selling fish, and several times brought her money. Alfred Millen staid accused had been in the country with him selling fish, and ho had paid him wages. Ho had heard him asking for work.
