NORTH OTAGO AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.

Tho annual mooting of tho mombors of tho North Otago Agricultural and Pastoial ABSOciation will be held on Saturday afternoon next. Below wo fiivo tho statomouta to be submitted to the mooting.

ANNUAL REPORT. Your Committee, before vacating thoir oflico, beg to present the following report of their transactions during their term of office terminating to-day. The year's work was entered upon with somo forebodings of ita results in a financial aspect ; inasmuch as the depression that has been felt for some time seemed to be more intense, with smill prospect of its removal. But your Committee have- pleasure in congratulating the members of the Association on ita position, duspito the advorso and untoward influences which J existed in the facts of low prices and poor returns for agricultural productions, and tho critical state of the moat and wool markets. Tho finances of the Association are greatly improved sinoo last year although ono source of revenuo was cut off hrough tho intervention of tho now Licensing Committee in preventing the holding of the usual booths for tho sale of spirituous liquors, resulting in a loss of about L5O. Tho books and accounts of the honorary treasurer (Mr A. Hodley) havo been duly Audited by Messrs Montagu and Skeet. Tho credit balance at end of last year was L 45 9s 6d. Tho revenuo received during tho year, including L3B of arrears of subscriptions for 1893-94, was LB2l 18s, thus making tho total sum to bo accounted for L 867 7s 6d. Tho total oxpondituro was L 785 12* Id, leaving a balance of LBl 15s 5d at tho credit of tho Association on 31st March, 1895. Tho statement of a-aots and liabilities extending up to next Show gives a credit balance (>f L 27 19d. At tho samo period last year your C nnmittee bogan with a debit balanco of L 25 16a lOd, so that as a matter of fact iho Association has bettered its position by L 53 15s lid, Tho annual parade of entire horses was hold on tho 25th September, 1894, and was only modoratoly sucoi-ssful. There were only 19 ontiies altogether, and the attendance of farmers and others was loss than usual on account of the boistetous weathor. There wore 13 draughts, 2 thoroughbreds, and 4 coaching and trotting stallions, The annual show of live stock, etc., was hold on the 15th and 10th November, 1894, and waß successful beyond tho anticipations of the most sanguine of your Committee The entries were in dotail : Homes, 154 ; cattle, 151 ; sheep, 246 ; pigs, 6 ; dairy produce, 81 ; cured meats, 13 ; bread, 60 ; agricultural implements, 96 ; grain, 0 ; seeds, 13 ; dogs, 18 ; extras, 26 ; total, 870, as against 657 m 1893, an increase of 213. Your Committee purposed to hold a reaper and binder trial, and had made all tho necessary arrangements for carrying it oul, but as no oilers of crop were made that wore at all suitable, the intention was abandoned. Entry money of machine agonts and farmers was returned. Tho twelfth ram an ewe fair was hold on tho lOih March. Tho entries were about the usual number, and thoro was a fair attendance of local farmers and graziers. How to induce the attendance of uut-ido purchasers, and to make tho fair more attractivo to sheepbreedcrs generally, is a titling matter f«-r tho now Committuo to consider. Tho Bile of rams was fairly good at tho moiorato prices now too common. In connection with this Bubjoct your Committee lias reason to hope that the publication of tho Flock Register will havo a good effect in affording roliablo information to pur* clmsers and, to a largo extent assisting to prevent any other than purebred stock being off Wed at future ram fairs. Your Cominittoo desiro to thank tho judges for thoir kind sorvicos at tho show — hocvices moro than usually onerous from their being only ono judge employed it each class. Tho attendance at monthly meetings was as follows : John lleid 8, H A j Chaffoy 4, A Hcdloy 8, J S Holmes 6, D Borno 4, T Little 5, A Murdoch <>, J MThorson 4, \V W D.iwson 4, E Menlovo 3, E P Burbury 4, J Williams 7, A C King 5. A Thomson 3, J B Taylor 4, James Itoid 6, T Reid 6, D M'Farlano 2, J Gommoll 5, J Donaldson 4, D M'Gregor 3, J Mitchell 6, W II ttose 7, W Stringer 3, G Rutherford 0, J Cowio Nicholls 0, G Livingstone 4. Tho recommendation given to your Committoo on their appointment, to attend to the painting of tho woodwork on Show Ground has not been given effect to. They therefore piss it on to thoir successors as now being almost a matter of urgency. Your Commitieo, in retiring, havo every conlidonco and hopo that tho Association, now that it has surmounted many of its difficulties, will succesbfully continue in promoting tho improvement of tho agricultural and pastoral industries of North Otago. John Reid, Cliairman.

For a year so the unomployod in Victoria who desired work and wera willing (o go prospecting in the country have been (<uppl ed with miners' rights and railway passes free of charge. Suspicions have for some time been enter* tamed that these freo passes were being bought by swindlers who had not the. smallest intention of Attempting to mako an honest living by the laborious use of a pick and shovel. Detoctivo M'Manamny learned that chief among the offenders wera small bookmakers, wh > wera very often unable to meet their liabilities when favorites were successful, Acting upon his information, the de'ectivo arrangtd to be supplied with the name o£ anyone who applied for letters of recommendation to the Minister of Mines for passes In accordance wi h the arrangement, M'Manamny found that two man named Farland and Fox desired passes to Bairnsdale. As soiue races were to bo hold there ho followed this application, saw chat L v»as granted, and waited |ab the train tosee if the men would go.
