HAMPDEN. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
The annual concert in aid of the funds of the H^mpdon school was held on Friday evening last, and was one of the most successful concerts ever held in Hampden, which is saying a great deal, as the Humpdon School O iinmitteo are always in the ran in getting the btst available Ulent, and it was admitted by everyone tint tho singers and players would be ha<d to boat. Though the ne: proceeds Are not so large MS in other years, this is acc»un'ed for by the fact that the pr cc* were thn year lowered to correspond with the times. Tho uec proceeds nmounted to about Lib*. The chairman (Mr Win. Nicolsoi.) in a few well chosen words explained the object of tho concert, and incidentally remarked that the oUoiiun of a new school committee would be hold on Monday evening, and ho hoped to see a good attendance of householders, and would like to see tome new blood on the com* raitte as a few of the o.'d memheis were desirous of retiring. It would take up too much space to pirticuluise the various items on tho programme, so I will content myself with giving the hships of the performer?. Tho firs' pare aas oponed wi h a pmnoforto duet by Mcsdnmea Sic Ue and Watt ; song, Air Findlny ; s.jii^, MUs Booth ; comic song, Mr Liwson (encortd) ; song, Miss lnnes (encored) ; comic song, Mr Fraer (encored) ;.*ong, Miss Andrews ; Bong, Miss Mainland (encored) ; song, Mr Moodie (tncoiei); s->ng, Mrs Reid (encorod); song, Mi»h Familton. Tho singing of Mrs Reid and Miss limes was highly appreciated, and was really tirst-class, while our Uarapden favorite, Miss Mainland, was in good form, and Messrs Fraer and Lawson, wi h their comic sjiigs and sketches were a host in themselves ; Mr FmdUy, of Palmeratod, was well liked, while our local talent acquitted themselves well Mr Murcott proposed a hearty vote of th<tuks to tho performers in a noat li* tie speech, which it was needless to say was carried by acclamation. Mr M'Korrow proposed a vote of thanks to tho Clmirm <n, and eulogised him on the success of the concert, which was mainly due to his ener^u'ic canvass for performers, and these were of the first w.t er, v.d could hardly be unproved upon. Atter tho hall had been chared dancing was indulged in until the small hours of tho morning. Mr D. Howie made nu efficient M.C , and music was supplied by Messrs Parker (violin) and St. Clair (piano).
