SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.
KUROW. The annual meeting of householders was held in the achool house on Monday ereniog. There was a good attendance. Mr G. Orr was yoted to bbo ohair. The miouteBof the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The balance sheeb and reporb were adopted ai read. Tne election of a new Coraraitteo resulted as follow* ; Messrs G. Orr, F. W. Thiele, J. Smith, W. Fraser, Hoddinob, O. Stringer, T. A. Munro. The following ia the annual reporb : The Committee have the honor to report thab they took office ab the last annual meeting with a credit balanco of LI 4 17b 9d from the outgoing Committeo, and as shown by our balancesbeeb our income from all sources until the end of the financial year — 31bt March, 1895 -was LlO5 Oa 4d. The expenditure for the same period waa L9B lla 6d, showing a credib balance ab the 31sb of March of LG 8* lOd; from 31sb Mnrch to 20tb April shows furth- r expenditure of L 6 8s 9d, len'ing,*. credit balance en the 20bh April of I"?. There still remain liabilities to the amount of Ll2 ll« lid, to thab the incoming Committee take office with a liabi'iiy of Ll2 11s lOd. The Committee held 13 ordinary meeting! during the year and 12 special meetings, the attendances at which have been as follows : Oir 24, Fraser 24, Munro 23, White 20, Smith 20, Chapman 13, Somrnerville 8. By way of improving the school grounds the Committee undertook wbab they considered a very important work — viz , the preparing, planting and fencing in of the whole of the school grounds ab a cost of abou l - LBO los. "We are much indebted to the Education Board's liberality for n donation of L2B 12a Gel, also to MiGeorge Sutherland for his kind donation to the school, which realised some* thing like LG 7s Dd. We would recommend to our buc« censors the continuing of the good work of planting, improving, and beautifying the scbo)l ground?. Two weeks ago, on the appearance of chicken pox amongst the children attei ding bhe scVool, on the recommendation of Dr. Stevens the Committee thought it advisable to close the school indefinit°Jy, consequently the school was closed for one week. On the Committee coming into office their first work was the appointment of a successor to Mibs Ballantyne. The i ommittee's choice fell on Miss Macdonald, from Dunedin, who, after a year's teaching, shows thab the Committee made an excellent) choice. Mies Macdonald is proving heraeli an able and punstaking teacher, and an able assistant to the headmaster. The school still continues to make good progress, as the subjoined report shows : The following is the attendance duriog your term of office, and also the Inßppcbor's reporb : Attendance for quarter ending— June, IS9I 76-4 September ... ... ... 77'<S December 88.3 March, 1893 92.5 The school is steadily on the increase. Inspector Taylor examined the echool on October 22nd, when 51 children presented for Bbandard certiticite6 45 passed ; percentage of passes being 88. He also reported that the attentioD, order, and manners of the pupils were very good.
DUNTHOON. The annual meeting of householders for tho Duntroon districb was held in b e scLoolhouae on Monday last. TliPre «ere 26 honseholders present, and Mr B. B. Welsh was voted to the chair. The Chairman read the report of the retiring Committee, which was as follows : The Committee took office in April, 1894, and during the year have held 17 meetings, the attendance of members being as under :
At the firßt meeting of Committee Mr B, B. Welsh was nppointel chairman and Mr R, Hyslop hoo. aecreb-iry. The Committee has done a lot of npcßssary work during the yoar, including a plantation of trees along the bank of the Maerewhenua river and other parts of the grounds — 200 trees and] shrubs, both us Jul and ornamental, were planted. A conoerb was held during the year for the benefib of the school funds, and realised LI 1 19s. The Committee desire to tender tbeir thanks to all helpers, and eapfcia ly to the ladies who helped to make ib such a success. The examination took phce on the 220 d October, by Inspector Tay'or, and proved very Batiiftctory. Tbe teachers have earned out their parb of tbe work in a thoroughly satiflfactory manner, and the Committee beg to asserb tbab the teaching (staff ia second to none that has been in Dun* troon. The attendance ha? gradually increased daring the year. The roll showed, when your Committee took office, as follows : Girls 43G, boyi 28 4 ; total average attendance 72, with a roll of 91 ; at the preeenb timo i») ihowe : Gnlas2'l boya 34 8; tobal average attendance 86 9, with a roll of 98 The Committee have nrtich pleaiure in handing over to their successor* tbe school and ground in firstclass conditioo, having expended the sum of L 35 during the year on repairs and other necessary works, and alto hand over the handsome balance of LI 6 83 lOd lo tbeir successor*. tdab fchid system now commenced may bo continued. The above report was considered most satisfactory, and was unanimously adopted by the m eel ing. The meeting then proceeded to elect a Committee for the ensuing year Messrs R. Little and J. llennio bring appointed scrutineers. There were 10 candidates nominated, and a ballot being taken, resulted as follows : Messrs 11. Hyslop 22, J. B. Taylor 21, B. 13. Welsh 21, J. A Taylor 20, W. J. Yurdley 19, J. Sweeney 17, J. Stovonson ID, T. More 13, J. Earl 12, G. Parks 3. The (Jhuirmfin declared ihe first seven duly elected. A vote of thanks to the retiring Committee and one to the Chairman brought tbe meeting to a close.
HAKATKHAMEA VALLKY. The olection of raember3 for the Hakftterftmea Valley School Committee took place on Monday evoning, when Messrs J, Cameron, T. Milno, W. Milno, J. Menz'es, W. Euimott, J. Hogg and O. Bell were re-electpd. Mr John Cameron was elected chairman, and Mr G. B-01, secretary.
