Tlin fund Commission commonced its Wanganui sitting? to-day. Mr J. Stevenson, of tho Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile asked that the duty on wool-picks and slioop drench bo removed. Mr 11, Williamson, chemist, requested tho rectification of anomalies in the tariff effecting the choinical trade. Mr C. W, Poynter, represent)ing A. L>. Willis, and D Blair, of tho technical school, asked that a duty of 25 per cent bo placed on such imported drawing books used in schools as could bo locally manufactured, or fail ing that, that the duty on cartridgo paper used in tho mauufnctnro of eacli book should bo removed. Henry Walkem, roprcseuting A. Mnrtin, photopraphor, and W. 11. F. Kinson, photog'aplmr, pointed out) that while photographs on sensitised paper were admit ted for 15 per cent, the paper itself was subject to a duty of 20 per cent. '1 hoy also stated that a large tirm on tho other sido had taken negatives of Now Zealand scenery, and were flooding tho market with photo graphs. P. D. Hogg, representing several importers, geve evidence as to anomalies in tho soft goods trade, and J. Soder, wine merchant), asked that tho duty should nob be taken off Australian wines. The Nelson volunteei'3 are still in town, and will leave here on Saturday by the Murray and Waverley. The following telegram was received by Colonel Pitt yesterday from the Defence Minister : " The Hon. tho Premier nnd the Defence Minister, desires to disseminate through you his satisfaction at the energy, plujk, and endurance shown by all ranks in your command during the late Easter Encampment at Fielding, under tho unusual trying circumstances to which they were exposed, and his assurance hat ho feels that the troops who could so cheerfully submib to stress of weather, extra cost, shortness of sup plies, and want of ordinary campaign comforts would be equally as reliable wore their country aud their homos in danger.
