The Executive Council has commuted the sentence of death passed ou George Dean for attempting to poison hii wife at North Shore to imprisonment for life. Tho Premier gives as tho reason tho Judge's strong recommondation to mercy, and the previous good character borne by tho condemned man. In tho Legislative Assembly Mr Crick brought tho subject up on tho motion for adjournment, aud ohallonged the Government to appoint a Royal Commission to take evidence in the ca»e, and said he would stake his reputation on his ability to bring evidence which would prove that Dean was iunoccut of th* crime. The motion for adjournment w&a negatived.
