The Walpoua and iluamuhutig* rjvors ore' flowed in the Wairarapa, and the former caused some fear for the safety of Miattrton, whore a large portion of the township was under water. A milkman named Gompton was washed down the river »od Dearly drowned. A large area in other parts of the valley is also under water. William Hobbs, aged 17, was riding along the Waikari road, when the bank collapsed, and both he and his horse fety into the Akaterawa river and were drownod, The gale abated to some extent after midnight, but the weather is still squally and showery.
